Let's Build Our PLN

Blogging has been on hold... OK.  I haven't posted in two years! One goal I have for 2020 is to be more intentional in my professional online presence.  Connecting with members of my professional learning network (PLN) has proven to provide some of the greatest professional growth and learning opportunities.  I have "met" many educators who have made an impact on my leadership and instruction.

Feel free to follow me at the links below.  Add your social media accounts in the comments, so we can grow together.

ISTE 2018

I have the elite honor of speaking at the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Conference in Chicago July 2018.  While there, I will be presenting two sessions.

  • Are We Advocating or Educating? Social Media Guidelines for Students —As we implemented 1:1 in our schools, it was necessary to establish social media guidelines for our students. Follow our creation from beginning to end of our board-approved social media guidelines to educate our students on acceptable use. This presentation is scheduled for Monday, June 25, 2:00–4:00 pm CDT.
  • Teachers' Perceptions of Their Administrators' Influence on Technology Use in the Classroom —Based on the 2009 ISTE Standards for Administrators, this study determined the technological leadership qualities that teachers perceived as most critical, most important, and most influential on their daily integration of technology into instruction. The presenter will give the results of the study and ways to improve those leadership competencies. This session is based on my dissertation research.  This presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, 10:15–11:15 am CDT.

Top Elementary Teacher on Twitter

teacher certification degrees
WOW! What an honor to be selected as a Top Elementary Teacher on Twitter.  I am #32 among some great teachers.

Twitter is a fantastic way to communicate and collaborate with teachers across the country.  So many of the things that I have learned, shared, and incorporated are because of my networking on Twitter.  If you are not a Twitterer, I suggest you give it a try.  My Twitter handle is @WhiteheadsClass.  Feel free to follow.

Social Media Manners

Your mom always taught you to mind your manners.  Do you think about your manners when you are involved in social media?  As I was preparing a presentation on "Extending Your Reach Using Social Media," I was researching etiquette in using social media.  Through my web searches, I have derived a list of the top 10 rules of social media etiquette that I think are most important.  What would you add?

1)Acknowledge when someone follows, comments, or retweets. A thank you goes a long way!
2)Keep your posts positive.
3)Be careful clicking on links.  If it looks suspicious, it probably is.
4)Don’t be afraid to interact with businesses. I have had some really great opportunities and received some really great products for free by simply responding to a Tweet or blog post.
5)Give credit where credit is due.  We all have great things to share.  Be sure you acknowledge the source.
6)Complete your profiles and add a picture.  We like knowing there is a real person on the other end.
7)Don't put anything on the Internet that you wouldn't want your boss to read.  They do check!
8)Spellcheck everything before you send.
9)Post regularly but not too often.  We want to read what you share, but if it becomes too frequent, we often skip over your posts.
10)Don't follow someone just for the sake of building your number of followers.  You will find yourself overwhelmed if you are trying to follow to many people.  Follow those who share what is important to you.

Bonus:  Learn to use hashtags.  Hashtags are keywords or phrases that users search to find topics of interest.  They always begin with #.  {Click here} for an extensive list of educational hashtags.

Social Media Friends

As I prepare to presentation for the Alabama NBCT Network Conference entitled "Expanding Your Reach Using Social Media," I ponder what that really means.  As a teacher, it is fiercely important to give and take.  We share lesson plans, teaching ideas, complaints, and successes.  Social media has broadened my network of "teacher friends" to those across the country.  There are people I have met through this blog, Twitter, Facebook, and Edmodo that have strengthened my teaching skills,  provided a continual drive for excellence, and encouraged me along the way.  We give and take unselfishly. (I tend to take more than give!) We are teachers first in order to educate kids.  Social media is not used to become "famous." It is used to make us better teachers, accountable to each other, so we can provide our students with the best education possible.  I am thankful for my social media friends!

Extending Your Reach Using Social Media

On January 26, 2013, Farrah Kilgo (Think*Share*Teach) and I have the opportunity to present at the Alabama NBCT Network Conference.  This conference is not just for National Board Certified Teachers.  It is open to all teachers.

Social media gives teachers the opportunities to connect with others by sharing ideas, collaborating together, and contributing thoughts in order to effectively enhance their curriculum.  Our presentation will focus on how teachers can most effectively use social media to extend their reach professionally.  We will explore how to use Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Edmodo, and blogs to their fullest potential.

Farrah and I are avid social media users.  We are bloggers and Twitterers (@WhiteheadsClass and @KilgosClass).  Please feel free to follow us on Pinterest, too (Cara and Farrah).  Both of us use Facebook and  Edmodo professionally and with our classes.

We look forward to you joining us for our session and in the social media world.

Operation 2012-2013: My Goals for Next Year

As this school year winds down, I have been thinking of things I want to add and improve for the next school year. I would appreciate any ideas, tips, or comments you have as I initiate Operation 2012-2013.

  • Common Core Integration-We are moving into the Common Core Standards. Although, I am familiar with the 4th grade standards, I need to familiarize myself with the 3rd grade standards. It will be necessary to fill in the gaps for this group of students. Also, I want to make sure my current curriculum matches the standards and make appropriate changes if needed.
  • Better Writing Instruction-Teaching writing has always been a struggle for me. Often, proper writing instruction falls to the wayside because I just don't know the best approach to take. Over the summer, I plan to research various programs and find one that best fits my students and me. Any recommendations will be appreciated.
  • Daily Five Implementation-I am familiar with the Daily Five. In fact, I own the book! However, I have never implemented the program completely. My goal this year is to fully implement the program in order to achieve success in all of my students.
  • Revamp my Classroom Setup-My classroom is very small, and every inch of the space is utilized. I hope to maximize the space for easier flow, small group instructions, peer tutoring, and availability of materials for student use. I have found several ideas on Pinterest for storage seats made out of five gallon buckets, decorative boxes to store manipulatives and supplies, circular drying racks for displaying student work, etc. I've visited other classroom and gathered ideas. Also, I want to provide each student with a book box. I am still looking at various examples to find what will fit my limited space and budget most effectively. What do you use?
  • Include Math Notebooking-Throughout the year, I have been introduced to math notebooking through blogs, Pinterest, and presentations. It is a topic that I think would be very influential in math learning. We are getting a new math program this year, so I plan to incorporate math notebooking with it.
  • Do a Better Job with Science and Social Studies-This was a goal I had last year, and in my mind, I failed miserably. Due to a lack of time and a push for greater math and language arts instruction, my ideas of more project based learning activities, research projects, and hands-on experiments fell to the wayside. Students need to be immersed in science and social studies instruction.
  • Provide Social Media Opportunities for Students-My students are give many opportunities to integrate technology into their learning. A whole other area of technology integration that I plan to tackle is social media. My students use Edmodo on a daily basis, but I want to expand into Twitter, blogging, website creation, Pinterest, etc. Kids of all ages are already using social media, but no one has ever stopped to teach them appropriate digital citizenship. I want my students to know how to use social media responsibly.

So, Operation 2012-2013 is now underway! This is a long list but one that is highly attainable. Can you help me stay accountable? Throughout the summer, I will be preparing for next year's class. My students deserve the very best education that I can provide.

Social Media in the Classroom

I am preparing a presentation on social media in the classroom. Would you take a minute to answer a couple of questions? The information received will be valuable to all teachers. I will publish the results at a later date. Thanks in advance!
